Remote control and scheduling make smart plugs convenient. Users can switch devices on or off, create routines and automate lights even when away from home.
Energy-monitoring smart plugs can show how much electricity an appliance uses, helping identify power-hungry devices and reduce unnecessary standby consumption.
Smart plugs are not completely energy-free. They continuously use electricity to stay connected, with many models drawing around 1–2 watts in standby.
Security and privacy are hidden concerns. Poorly secured or outdated smart plugs can create another entry point into a home network, while apps may collect usage data.
Internet dependence can also become a problem. Weak Wi-Fi, cloud outages, app failures or firmware issues can delay commands or make smart features unavailable.
