Keep Your Phone Out of the TSA Bin — Here’s the Safer Way

Phone in carry-on: Place your phone inside your carry-on bag before it reaches the X-ray belt. TSA says small items are safer in a bag than loose on the belt.

Use a zipped pocket: Choose an interior zippered pocket rather than an open pouch. It keeps the phone secure, reduces theft risk, and prevents it from slipping out during screening.

Empty pockets early: While waiting in the security line, move your phone, keys, wallet, and other pocket items into your carry-on. This saves time and avoids last-minute scrambling.

Avoid shared bins: TSA officers advise against placing phones in bins that may have held shoes or other personal items. Keeping the phone in your bag reduces contact with shared surfaces.

Prevent belt mishaps: Never place a phone directly on the X-ray conveyor. Small devices can fall between the belt rollers and become difficult or impossible to retrieve.

Know large-device rules: Laptops, tablets, e-readers, and similar larger electronics usually must be removed and placed alone in a bin. Phones can normally stay inside your carry-on.

Follow officer guidance: At CT-scanner checkpoints, travelers may keep electronics in their bags, but procedures vary. Always follow the TSA officer’s instructions at your specific lane.
