Ethernet Connected? Should You Turn Off Wi-Fi: Plugged your computer into an Ethernet cable but still have Wi-Fi switched on? You probably don't need to turn it off! Most computers automatically prefer the wired connection for internet traffic. However, keeping Wi-Fi enabled can be useful for certain features and situations.
Ethernet Usually Takes Priority: When Ethernet and Wi-Fi are both connected, many computers prioritize the wired connection for internet traffic, though settings and operating systems can affect how they behave.
Get a More Stable Connection: Ethernet can provide a reliable connection with less wireless interference, making it useful for video calls, online gaming, large downloads, and other demanding tasks.
Does Wi-Fi Slow Down Ethernet: Keeping Wi-Fi enabled usually does not noticeably slow down your Ethernet connection, because the computer generally routes internet traffic through the preferred wired interface.
Keep AirDrop and Nearby Features Working: On a Mac, Wi-Fi may support features such as AirDrop and other local wireless connections even when Ethernet handles internet access, so switching Wi-Fi off can disable useful functions.
When Should You Turn Wi-Fi Off: Disable Wi-Fi if you want to reduce wireless connections, troubleshoot network problems or follow your workplace's security policy, but check which features you may lose first.
Check Which Connection Is Active: On Windows, check Network settings or the taskbar to confirm Ethernet is connected; on macOS, open System Settings and review the Network section to see your active interfaces.
What If Your Computer Still Uses Wi-Fi: If internet traffic appears to use Wi-Fi despite an Ethernet connection, check network priority, adapter settings, cable condition and router ports before changing advanced configurations.
Does Ethernet Make Your Network More Secure: A wired connection can reduce exposure to some wireless risks, but it does not automatically make browsing safe; use updated software, strong passwords and appropriate security controls.
