5 Google Search Tricks That Can Help You Find Better Results

Exact Phrase Search
Use quotation marks around a phrase to find pages containing those exact words in that exact order. For example, searching “remote work productivity tips” removes results that merely mention the words separately. Google confirms this operator forces an exact match.

Site-Specific Search
Add site: before a website or domain to limit results to that source. For example, “AI policy site:gov” finds government pages about AI policy. Remember not to add a space after the operator; Google requires site:gov, not site: gov.

Filetype Search
Use filetype: to locate specific document formats such as PDFs, spreadsheets, or presentations. A search like “digital marketing checklist filetype:pdf” surfaces downloadable PDF guides instead of ordinary webpages. This is especially useful for research, templates, reports, and official documentation.

Exclude Unwanted Words
Place a minus sign directly before a word to remove it from results. For example, “jaguar -car” helps find information about the animal rather than the automobile brand. This trick reduces irrelevant results when a search term has multiple common meanings.

Filter by Date or Location
Use Google’s Tools menu to filter results by time period, such as the past year, or add a place to your query for local results. Searching “best coffee shops Mumbai” or “climate report after:2025” helps surface fresher and more relevant information.
