Microsoft's CTO, Kevin Scott, has revealed that the company's alliance with OpenAI was "basically a bet" on Sam Altman's company.

Scott, Microsoft's CTO since 2017, acknowledged that AI progress was accelerating and that Microsoft needed to advance its infrastructure.

He also mentioned that Microsoft couldn't do everything by itself and that OpenAI could forecast what it could get from investing in computing.

Microsoft is developing MAI-1, a large language model with 500 billion parameters, to rival Google and OpenAI models.

Microsoft teams sometimes require custom work, including training models from scratch or fine-tuning existing ones.
