Xbox Controllers Still Use AA Batteries: Here’s Why

Simran Mishra

Unlike PlayStation controllers, standard Xbox wireless controllers use replaceable AA batteries, giving gamers more control over how they power their devices.

Microsoft says player choice is the main reason. Xbox found that gamers have divided preferences, with many still preferring traditional AA batteries over built-in rechargeable cells.

Players can use disposable AA batteries, rechargeable AA cells, Microsoft's rechargeable battery pack, or a USB-C cable to power their Xbox controller.

Replaceable batteries can extend a controller's usable lifespan. When rechargeable cells wear out, players can simply replace the batteries instead of dealing with a sealed internal battery.

No need to pause gaming for a recharge! Players can swap depleted AA batteries for a fresh pair in seconds and continue playing wirelessly.

Microsoft also offers an Xbox Rechargeable Battery Pack with a USB-C cable. It allows players to recharge their controller while playing or between gaming sessions.

The AA battery design has a downside. Standard Xbox controllers do not include a built-in rechargeable battery, so players must purchase a separate rechargeable pack for that experience.

A long-standing Duracell partnership sparked rumours that a battery deal keeps Xbox controllers using AA cells. However, Microsoft has highlighted player choice as its design reason.

Want to avoid disposable batteries? Use rechargeable NiMH AA cells or buy the official Xbox Rechargeable Battery Pack to enjoy wireless gaming without repeatedly purchasing new batteries.
