Who Commands India’s UPI Ecosystem in 2026?

PhonePe Leads India’s UPI Race: PhonePe remains the biggest UPI app in India. In June 2026, it handled 46.2% of UPI transaction volume, with 10.48 billion transactions. Its large merchant network and reach across cities and smaller towns continue to support its lead.

Google Pay Holds a Strong Second Spot: Google Pay ranked second with a 32.6% share and 7.41 billion transactions in June 2026. Its Android integration, Google account ecosystem and simple peer-to-peer payment experience have helped it maintain a strong position.

PhonePe and Google Pay Dominate UPI: Together, PhonePe and Google Pay processed nearly 79% of UPI transaction volume in June. They also handled around 82.5% of the total transaction value, showing how strongly the two apps still control consumer UPI payments.

Paytm Remains the Biggest Challenger: Paytm held third place with a 7.9% share and around 1.80 billion transactions in June. Despite being far behind the top two, its established brand and large merchant network keep it among India’s leading UPI players.

Smaller UPI Apps Are Gaining Ground: Navi and super.money are emerging as notable challengers. Navi held around 3.7% of transaction volume, while super.money reached about 1.9%. Cashback, credit products and app-specific offers are helping smaller platforms attract users.

Who Runs UPI Behind the Apps?: The consumer-facing apps do not own UPI itself. NPCI operates the core UPI infrastructure and sets its technical and operating framework. The Reserve Bank of India provides regulatory oversight, while banks support accounts and payment services.

India’s UPI Network Is Massive: UPI processed 22.72 billion transactions worth ₹28.92 lakh crore in June 2026 across 731 live banks. The scale shows why UPI has become a major part of India’s digital payment system.

Is the PhonePe-Google Pay Duopoly Weakening?: Slightly. Their combined transaction share fell below 80% in May and stayed around that level in June. Navi, super.money and other smaller platforms are gaining ground, but neither challenger is yet close to the top two nationally.

The Next UPI Battle Is About More Than Payments: Basic UPI transactions offer limited pricing power. Fintech companies are increasingly looking at merchant services, credit, insurance, wealth management, bill payments and commerce to earn more from their payment relationships.
