How Sim-Swap Scam Works and How to Stay Safe

Think your SIM card is safe? Scammers can hijack it and steal your money. Here’s how the SIM-swap scam really works!

A SIM-swap scam happens when fraudsters trick your mobile provider into transferring your number to a new SIM card.

It often begins with phishing, scammers collect your personal info through fake emails, calls, or texts.

The scammer contacts your carrier, pretends to be you, and activates a new SIM with your number.

Once your number is hijacked, they can access bank OTPs, reset passwords, and drain your accounts in minutes.

No network signal, SIM deactivation, or sudden loss of access to online accounts are red flags of a SIM swap.

Enable SIM PINs, use strong passwords, and never share personal details with unknown callers or websites.

If your SIM stops working unexpectedly, contact your mobile provider immediately to block unauthorized swaps.

Always use app-based two-factor authentication instead of SMS OTPs for an extra layer of protection against SIM-based attacks.
