The Comeback of Retro Games With AI Upgrades

Simran Mishra

Retro games are making a comeback as AI helps restore classic titles, upgrade graphics, and bring old favourites to modern devices.

AI coding tools can reverse-engineer old game code, helping developers rebuild classic titles for PCs, smartphones, and web browsers.

AI-assisted decompilation and recompilation can speed up game porting projects that once took years, reducing the work to weeks or days.

Classic games like Halo are reaching web browsers, while other fan projects bring older titles to modern platforms without traditional emulators.

AI upscaling makes old game textures sharper, improves low-resolution graphics, and cleans up damaged visuals in classic titles.

AI can also restore old game cinematics by reducing visual noise, fixing damaged frames, and improving video quality.

EA has used optional AI-upscaled cinematics in its Wing Commander Anniversary Editions, while allowing players to watch original videos too.

Not every upgrade uses AI. Higher frame rates, controller support, and compatibility fixes often come from traditional development and community patches.

AI ports also raise concerns about copyright, unstable releases, and game preservation. Human developers remain essential for testing and accuracy.
