Apple has initiated legal proceedings against YouTuber Jon Prosser, claiming unauthorized disclosure of classified trade secrets related to iOS 26. The suit maintains that Prosser gained access to the details of the confidential iOS 26 features using a development iPhone provided by Apple Engineer Ethan Lipnik.
The phone allegedly contained unreleased features like a redesigned Camera app, revamped Messages app, and the new ‘Liquid Glass’ UI design.
Michael Ramacciotti, named as a co-conspirator, is accused of learning Lipnik’s iPhone passcode and using location tracking to access the device while Lipnik was away. Ramacciotti then reportedly showed the phone’s interface to Prosser in a recorded video call.
Apple claims it learned about the breach in April through an anonymous email. A voice message later surfaced in which Ramacciotti apologized to Lipnik and blamed Prosser. Although Lipnik was allegedly unaware of the plan, he was fired for failing to protect Apple’s confidential property.
Apple has moved to recover damages as well as seek an injunction to stop further leaks, claiming the hacked device could still contain undisclosed design elements for iOS 26.
Prosser responded on X, stating, ‘I did not ‘plot’ to access anyone’s phone. I did not have any passwords.’ He claims to possess evidence supporting his innocence.
The action taken by Apple demonstrates a heightened commitment to protect its product development timetables and market launch strategies. It represents a shift towards a more aggressive enforcement of confidentiality in the industry. This could establish a vital precedent for how tech companies manage the risk of unauthorized information in an ever-closer interconnected digital environment.
