OpenAI CEO Sam Altman Expects a 'Brutal' AI Chip Shortage to End Next Year

IndustryTrends

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman expects the 'brutal' AI chip shortage that has affected the development and deployment of AI applications to end next year.

Nvidia is the dominant player in the market for AI chips, especially its high-end H100 processors, which cost $40,000 each and are used by OpenAI and other AI companies.

OpenAI has been able to secure enough GPUs for its needs, thanks to its partnership with Microsoft, which provides cloud services and funding for the AI research lab.

Altman predicts that the supply and demand for AI chips will balance out in 2022, as more companies, such as Google, Microsoft, AMD, and Intel, compete with Nvidia.

ltman also says that the 'magic of capitalism' is doing its thing and that he is optimistic about the future of AI and its potential to solve global problems and improve human lives.
