Google's AI Tool Predicts the Harmful Genetic Mutations

IndustryTrends

Google DeepMind, the tech giant's AI department, unveiled a tool on Tuesday.

The tool forecasts if genetic abnormalities may cause harm, a discovery that might aid research into uncommon diseases.

The findings are "another step towards recognizing the impact that AI is having in the natural sciences," according to Pushmeet Kohli, vice president of research at Google DeepMind.

The technique concentrates on "missense" mutations, which impact a single letter of the genetic code.

A normal human genome has 9,000 such mutations, which can be innocuous or cause illnesses such as cystic fibrosis or cancer, or affect brain development.
