Google Wants Apple to Share iMessage

IndustryTrends

Google and major European telecom operators urge EU regulators to designate Apple's iMessage as a core platform service under the Digital Markets Act (DMA)

The DMA aims to prevent market dominance and unfair practices by tech giants, and imposes obligations on core platform services, such as interoperability and data portability

Google and the telecom operators argue that iMessage is a gatekeeper for political advertising and business communication, and that it should support Rich Communication Services (RCS), a cross-platform messaging protocol that offers features similar to iMessage

Apple rejects Google's pressure and claims that consumers have access to a wide variety of messaging apps, and that iMessage is not a core platform service under the DMA criteria

The EU is expected to make its final decision on iMessage's status in February 2024, and could impose fines up to 10% of Apple's annual turnover for non-compliance
