FTC Nominees Pledge to Tackle Deceptive AI Practices

IndustryTrends

The fraudulent use of AI should be a top goal for the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), three commissioner candidates said at a confirmation hearing Tuesday, demonstrating cooperation on the contentious topic.

The hearing was held to discuss the re-nomination of Democratic Commissioner Rebecca Slaughter and the nominations of two Republicans, Virginia Solicitor General Andrew Ferguson and Utah Solicitor General Melissa Holyoak.

From 2019 through 2021, Ferguson served as top counsel to U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell.

When asked about the FTC's role in enforcing regulations concerning AI by Senator John Thune, Slaughter stated that it was the FTC's responsibility to investigate situations.

"There may be things (involving AI) that Congress thinks are problematic that go beyond what the FTC Act covers, and that is entirely up to you," she added.
